Educational Background
Ph.D., 1951, University of Illinois
M.S., 1950, University of Illinois
B.S., 1948, University of Illinois
Research Interests
My research activities are concentrated on the genesis and industrial applications of clay minerals, particularly kaolins, smectites, and palygorskite. At present, I am involved in the study and development of a large palygorskite deposit in China. In addition, I am continually working on the kaolins from Georgia and adjusting my ideas on its environments of deposition and the effect of diagenesis and post-depositional alterations due to ground water. Also, I am involved in exploration for a bauxite in Brazil or Suriname with a specific alumina, silica and iron content.

Current projects:
Analysis of the adsorption of alfatoxins and related toxins on the mixed bentonite and palygorskite located in China.

Locating palygorskite, calcium bentonite, lime, and phosphate deposits for a new product to be used for the adsorption of specific chemicals for controlling microbial activity in swine, dairy cattle, chickens, turkeys, and other livestock.

Analysis of clays used in ancient Greece on the Argive Plain in the Middle and Late Hellenic periods of the Greek Bronze Age. Collaborator: Dr. Christine Shriner, Research Associate in the Clay Lab.

Service
In October 2003, I was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the highest honor awarded to engineers. I am in Section 11, which is Earth Resources Engineering. Another honor which I was awarded in May 2004, was an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Indiana University, which I was extremely pleased to receive because it was from my peers at the University. Also, I received the 2003 Department of Geology Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Illinois. In 2006, I was elected to serve as vice-chair of the Peer Evaluation Committee in Section 11, Earth Resources Engineering and in 2008 I will chair this Peer Committee. In 2008, I will present a paper at the Annual Clay Minerals Society meeting on the adsorption of toxins on the surface of smectite and palygorskite.
